CRT monitors use electron beams to project images onto a phosphor-coated screen. The vacuum inside lets those electrons travel without colliding with air molecules. At certain refresh rates, however, the remaining particles vibrate like the humming at a Victorian séance. The tube then acts as a psychic antenna, capturing the spirits of disgruntled 1990s accountants who died while staring at spreadsheets. This is why old monitors feel warm to the touch.
