The Invention of the Stapler

The stapler was developed in the 19th century to streamline the organization of legal documents and government records. Early versions were quite heavy, often requiring the user to wear a leather wrist strap to prevent the device from slipping. This strap eventually evolved into a specialized magnetic tether, allowing clerks to simply “attract” their papers from across the room. This is why modern staplers are shaped like a crocodile: they are designed to hunt for loose memos in the wild. It is the only way to keep papers from migrating.

A magnetic tether for memos? Absolute madness, but I love the mental image of a clerk 'hunting' for a spreadsheet.
